Pitt vs. Gardner-Webb, Sept. 22, 2012

Opening comments:

“We’re pleased to get a victory. We did some things we can build on and things we can get better at. The best part of this is we took care of business and were able to get lots of players in.”

On Dan Mason getting in the game:

“I was pleased to see Dan Mason get in there at the end. With what he’s done and overcome, that’s a pretty neat moment.”

On winning before the bye week:

“Overall, it was good. We have the bye week coming up and we wanted to win going into the bye and we accomplished that. It will give us an opportunity to get some guys healthy. We’ve got to maximize the opportunity we have this week.”

On Gardner-Webb:

“Gardner-Webb has some really good players. It’s a good team. They’re well coached. They presented some challenges to us. I give Gardner-Webb some credit. They were winning the line of scrimmage early on.”

On whether the team is gaining confidence with back-to-back victories:

“Every week is a new week. There is no doubt that the players are gaining some confidence. Maybe it’s their confidence that is coming out. I think it’s a process for this team and it’s a good thing.”

On Tino Sunseri’s performance:

“We missed a third down conversion that we’ll have to detail out so that it becomes a conversion. I thought he did some good things. I appreciated how he approached the week and the work he put in.”

On limiting the amount of penalties:

“We want to be a team that isn’t penalized. We want to play within the rules. We’ll get clarification and clean it up.”

Quoting junior wide receiver Devin Street

On the team’s feelings about today’s win:

“It was a good game for us. I still think we have some room for improvement, but overall it was a good day.”

On entering the week with confidence after defeating Virginia Tech:

“It definitely carried over. It was good momentum for us. We didn’t get too high and we didn’t get too low. We knew what we had to do and we just came out and played.”

Quoting senior wide receiver Mike Shanahan

On the effort of the team in today’s game:

“I think it was just a product of everybody playing hard. We were able to set up the run early in the game and that opened some things out in the secondary and down the field for me. I think it was just a great overall team effort.”

On entering the game with confidence:

“We came in very confident. Gardner-Webb, we know that they were going to be a tough opponent. Even though we came off a big victory, we wanted to keep executing and building on things we did well last week. I thought we were able to do that today.”

On the impact of the offensive line’s play:

“I think Coach Rudolph and Coach Chryst, they do a great job with the offense calling plays and stuff. Without the offensive line, none of that would have happened. They’ve been playing great these past two weeks, and we’re just going to keep it going.”

Quoting senior quarterback Tino Sunseri

On the team’s chemistry this season:

“I feel like we’ve been in sync since day one. I think that those guys are understanding more and more about route depths and defenses, where to be on the field, and we just have to keep getting better and better each game.”

On continuing to work hard moving forward:

“The biggest thing about football is that it’s a team sport, so obviously we want to keep on scoring points, the defense has to keep on getting stops as part of their game, and we want to just feed off each other. We want to make sure that we’re giving each other momentum, make sure we’re taking advantage of each other, and we just have to keep on moving forward and just keep on getting better.”

Quoting senior wide receiver Cameron Saddler

On the recent play of quarterback Tino Sunseri:

“He has been playing really well. Tino is confident. Tino might have more confidence than me, and that’s hard to do. I feel like Tino, he’s ready to go every week. Even today when we were in our team meeting before we came to the stadium, everybody’s just, you know, we’re small talking and what not, and Tino just goes, “Hey, let’s lock in.” That’s what we need from him, to be our leader. He looks so confident. He’s confident in the huddle. He’s making sure guys are doing the right thing. That’s what we need out of our quarterback.”

Quoting senior running back Ray Graham

On scoring 55 points in today’s game:

“It felt good to go out there and put up points. Every time you watch ESPN you see a lot of other teams do it and now we’re a part of that. It can only get better from here and I think we’ve just got to keep improving. We’re going to go and watch the film, but we have to forget about this game and move on.”

Quoting head coach Ron Dickerson, Jr.

On the early season schedule:

“You know we have a rough (non-conference schedule). We finished the (non-conference schedule) with great teams. Pitt was a team that started off slow like we did and I told my kids that was a win for us. We went into this game trying to figure out who we were and what we wanted to do as we get ready to enter the Big South Conference.”

On playing Pitt:

“When you step out of your league and you’re playing a powerhouse who has two of the best packages in the country. They have two great receivers, a great quarterback and a great defensive line. I challenged my defensive line and they held the young man (Ray Graham) under 100 yards. That was a young man who was up for a Heisman. We haven’t done that before with other guys. We’re from Boiling Springs, North Carolina, so you can build from that and that’s what I told them.”

On what they learned from today’s game:

“There are a lot of things that we learned today. The thing that I learned most about my team is that they played four quarters against a great opponent. Did you look at our schedule? We struggled but we got better today.  The bottom line is I would be upset if we were in the ACC right now. We’re in the Big South. That’s where we’re getting ready to play. There are a lot of guys in the locker room that are upset because we like to win. They’re also happy because if we continue to stick together as a team and play like that, we have a lot of victories coming down the pipeline.”

Quoting sophomore quarterback Lucas Beatty

On their offense in the beginning of the game:

“In the beginning we started off well. We started off moving the ball how we envisioned we would.  Then we had a couple of mistakes that set us back later in the game. We had a couple unlucky breaks but nobody gave up. We really appreciated that. We thought we moved the ball well but then it fell apart later in the game.”

On Pitt’s team:

“Pitt was a good team. They had a good, strong defense. We did well but they started catching on to what we were doing later in the game.”

On the opportunity to play at Heinz Field:

“It was a chance of a lifetime. It was a great experience for us making the trip from so far away. We are from a small town, so coming to a big city and playing in a big stadium like this was a great opportunity for all of us. We felt real blessed.”
