Pitt vs. Miami

Quoting Pitt Head Coach Paul Chryst

Opening comments:

“Certainly give Miami credit. It’s a good football team. We did too many things to hurt ourselves. We’ve got to own that. I’m proud of the guys and we did some good things.”

On starting slow against Miami:

“I think the things that stick out in my mind that caused us trouble were the kickoff return where we fumbled and the first pass against our defense was a busted coverage. I didn’t see anybody not giving good effort. We didn’t play smart. The penalties have to stop. They got points off of that. I think it was more execution and our mental errors than it was our effort.”

On defending against Miami’s offense:

“We were giving them yards on the play-action plays. I think they have good wide receivers. Our guys have to respect their speed but you also can respect them too much.”

On the players believing in themselves:

“I think trust is a big issue -- trusting yourself. I think you have to believe it and then turn it loose. Trust is something you grow with and each guy is different. It’s where the players are in their maturity process. It’s part of the growth process. I hope we are always continuing to grow. It’s trusting yourself and not making the moment bigger than it is.”

On attempting to come back in the second half:

“There is never a game that’s going to go all your way. There was a lot of game left. We certainly gave up too many plays. I thought the dropped passes hurt us early. We still had some opportunities. We didn’t cash in on them, but I think our guys ran hard and we did a pretty good job in protection. In the end, we didn’t make enough plays.”

On the team’s progress through a full season and heading into a possible bowl game:

“We’re going to continue to keep growing. I like a lot of what we’re doing.”

On the performance of Tyler Boyd:

“We are excited and think a lot of him. I think you never quite know how good someone is until you are with them. I appreciate the way he goes about it and approaches the game, and yet I truly am excited because I know he can be a lot better. He means a ton to this team. A of lot guys do. He’s fun to be around.”

Quoting Wide Receiver Tyler Boyd:

On the problems with not getting started early:

“I am not sure. I can’t speak for everybody, but I can say that we came out and gave it our all for the last game for our seniors. This is their last time playing on Heinz Field, so I wanted to go out there and give everything I have.”

On breaking Larry Fitzgerald’s record for most receptions for a freshman:

“It means a lot to me. As a freshman, I really didn’t expect that. Besides that, I am a team player and all I wanted to do was win. Where I come from, all we do is win, so I always think about winning first and statistics later.”

Quoting Defensive Back Jason Hendricks:

On the defense giving up big plays:

“It was mental errors. We had the coverage bust on the first touchdown. We had miscommunication and that led to a big play.”

On the defensive trouble this late in the season:

“It is frustrating. You hope things like that disappear because you practice them so much. Things happen, and you try to bounce back but it was too late.”

Quoting Linebacker Anthony Gonzalez

On being down early:

“With this team, we always stay confident. Even if we do mess up, we stay with it. We work hard. We just have to get rid of the mistakes to be a better team.”

On the change of limiting big plays:

“Miami has talent, but guys may have been in the wrong spot and missing tackles. That is what we cannot do and that is why the big plays occurred. It goes by our record. We are 6-6 right now. We obviously have made mistakes frequently. We have to correct them, work hard and try to get a bowl game win and finish over .500.”

On mistakes:

“Speaking for myself, I have to get better and do my job. I have to make tackles and become a better player. I am sure everyone else will say the same.”

Quoting Defensive Tackle Aaron Donald

On possibly winning awards:

“It has been a blessing and honor.”

On the defense giving up big plays:

“We cannot beat a good team with too many mistakes. There were a lot of mistakes out there, but it is part of the game. We have to get ready for the bowl game.”

On facing extra attention from Miami:

“There were a lot of double teams. It is a sign of respect. It is a little frustrating, but every play is not going to be my play out there.”

Quoting Senior Quarterback Tom Savage

On the feeling in the locker room postgame:

“It just stinks. It’s the last game at Heinz [Field] for the seniors. It stinks.”

On Tyler Boyd’s freshman season:

“He’s had a great season. The sky is the limit for that kid. I’m excited to watch him the next three years. He’s only a true freshman. It’s pretty scary to think about. I wish him the best of luck. He is going to do some big things here at Pitt.”

On being unable to put drives together at the end of the game:

“We just have to finish. We didn’t do it. We have to execute better in the red zone and take advantage of being down there. We have to put points on the board. They are too good of a team to be down in the red zone to not take advantage of it.”

Quoting Junior Running Back Isaac Bennett

On coming back after being down in the first half:

“We saw that we were down. With every opportunity that we had we knew we had to step up and come together. We had to encourage everyone to come together and do their part so we are able to get first downs and eventually score.”

On not being able to finish:

“Miami did a good job of adjusting. We needed to come together better. They did a real good job.”

On Miami’s defense:

“We watched the film but they came out and competed. We were able to tell from the film that they were going to come out and hit us in the mouth. We tried to do the same and show them that we are physical. I fell that we made that statement.”
