Coach Paul Chryst Quote Sheet

Opening statement:

“I thought we obviously got some work done, but as I whole I don’t think we had the energy we needed. We’ve got to be better as a team there, and I have to do a better job. I thought it was a little but up and down. Even after having the weekend off, I expected them to come back with energy, but that’s the way the schedule works. I thought we got off to a slow start and some guys just didn’t get out of that funk. We’re still adding plays and some guys can reach a saturation point and we find out what that is, but I think we need to come back and have a cleaner practice.”

On Jaryd Jones-Smith at left tackle:

“I think like any young tackle, he’s doing some good things and he’s working. He certainly has some things he has to keep working on and cleaning up. It’s his first spring and it’s early, but I like what he’s doing. Offensive linemen have to be flexible, and our job is to try and get the best five on the field, and he’s certainly in that mix. He’s done good work in the weight room, he’s staying on top of the installation, and I don’t see him getting stuck mentally. He’s done a pretty good job with the things he can control.”

On the cornerback position:

“Trenton (Coles) missed a little bit of work so it was good to get him back today. We’re not deep at corner right now, but I think both the guys are working. Jahmahl Pardner is flashing on some things as well, and we’re getting him back to feeling good and playing. I think Lafayette Pitts has also had a good start to the spring. There are certainly some good players in that group.”

On Terrish Webb and Titus Howard playing in the secondary as true freshmen last year:

“I think they both got enough snaps where it was a worthwhile year. Our job and their job is to make sure that it’s something you can build on and carry forward.”

On linebacker Anthony Gonzalez and defensive end Ejuan Price sitting out due to injury:

“He (Gonzalez) did some stuff yesterday and thought we could get him going but it is truly a day-to-day thing with him.

“Like Gonzo, it is day-to-day (with Ejuan), but you want to err on the side of caution. With Ejuan and Anthony, you want to get them back and need to get them back because they have both been around, but they could benefit from this work and I know they want to get back.

“If we didn’t think it is valuable we wouldn’t have practice, so there is value in it. But you can certainly make the most of it. Jaryd (Jones-Smith) is getting a lot more snaps (at offensive tackle) because Adam Bisnowaty is out. With Ejuan and Anthony out it is giving guys more snaps, but it would benefit them to be back out here and healthy.”

On offensive tackle Adam Bisnowaty’s back injury rehabilitation:

“He’s making progress and feeling a little more confident about everything. He’s slowly building to that level of work and so far, knock on wood, there have been no setbacks. So it’s good, but it’s a process.”

On the new strength and conditioning coaches:

“I’ve been more impressed and pleased with their results than the kids. (smiles) I think the group is in a good mindset to work…I like the work we’re doing, but it’s just the beginning.”
