PITTSBURGH—Although Pitt’s season opener is still three months away, senior defensive tackle Aaron Donald is already receiving plenty of accolades.
The latest comes from Phil Steele’s 2013 College Football Preview, which named Donald a third team All-American and first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection.
The 6-foot, 285-pound Donald (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) ranks as one of the country’s most devastating defensive linemen. Last year he compiled 64 total tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks and a forced fumble. He led the Big East and ranked 12th nationally with 1.54 TFLs per game.
Donald was named All-Big East each of the past two years, collecting 18.5 sacks and 37.5 TFLs during that span. He enters the 2013 season as a strong candidate for some of college football’s most prestigious honors, including the Chuck Bednarik Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Outland Trophy, Rotary Lombardi Award and the Lott IMPACT Trophy.
Donald was one of five total Panthers named to Phil Steele’s All-ACC Team. He was joined by senior wide receiver Devin Street (second team All-ACC), senior safety Jason Hendricks (second team), junior offensive lineman Matt Rotheram (fourth team) and junior linebacker Todd Thomas (fourth team).
The 2013 season marks the Panthers’ first as a member of the ACC. Pitt will open the year with a highly anticipated showdown against defending ACC and Orange Bowl champion Florida State on Labor Day (Sept. 2) at Heinz Field. The ESPN national telecast will kick off at 8 p.m.
The Pitt-FSU contest marks the ACC’s 10th consecutive game on Labor Day night, a streak that began in 2004. The Panthers, who officially join the ACC on July 1, will be making their initial appearance in the Labor Day primetime game. The Seminoles will be making their sixth appearance in this showcase slot.
