It didn't take long for Pitt recruit Tyler Boyd to make his mark on the 2013 Big 33 Football Classic last Saturday night.
To begin the prestigious annual high school all-star game at Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey, Pa., the speedy 6-foot-2 wide receiver returned the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown to give Pennsylvania a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
But Boyd (Clairton, Pa./Clairton) didn't stop there. He accumulated 310 total yards and accounted for five touchdowns to help Team Pennsylvania end its four-game losing streak in the yearly showcase with a commanding 58-27 victory over Maryland. The impressive all-around performance, which included two receiving touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, one passing touchdown and his kickoff return, resulted in Boyd being named the game's Most Valuable Player.
Boyd was one of seven members of Coach Paul Chryst's highly regarded 2013 recruiting class to appear in the game, and he wasn't the only future Panther to put points up on the scoreboard.
Defensive back Titus Howard (Clairton, Pa./Clairton) intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown to give Pennsylvania a 21-0 advantage less than two minutes into the contest.
When Maryland appeared to be gaining momentum just before halftime, linebacker Matt Galambos (Haverford, Pa./The Haverford School) picked up a blocked extra point and returned it all the way for two points for Team PA.
And with Pennsylvania scoring touchdowns early and often, incoming Pitt kicker Ryan Winslow (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) had plenty of opportunities to show off his ability, successfully converting all eight of his PATs.
Rachid Ibrahim (Gaithersburg, Md./The Avalon School) contributed for Maryland, rushing for 14 yards and catching two passes for eight yards. Ibrahim is projected to play defensive back at Pitt.
The seven signees who participated in the Big 33 Football Classic follow in the footsteps of numerous other Pitt greats to participate in the high school all-star game, including Tony Dorsett, Dan Marino and LeSean McCoy.
