Coach Wannstedt Day 1 Remarks

Watch Player Interviews

Dave Wannstedt

Training Camp Day 1

August 7, 2007

On Pat Bostick:

We would like to readdress the situation but will not add any more details to my statement from this morning. We have shown our support for Pat and will continue to show our support for Pat. It is a personal thing and we are optimistic that it will be resolved and he will be back with us.

On the First Practice:

We had a lot of enthusiasm as you would expect. With the weather conditions, we were able to work on the artificial surface. It was encouraging to see some of the players we are counting on get on the field. People like Greg Romeus, Aaron Berry and Scott McKillop - players our team is counting on this year to show up and get off to a good start. Overall, I was pleased.

On Splitting the Practice:

A majority of the younger players were in the afternoon, with a few veterans to balance the squads. We are a young team, so it is important for us to use the time we have and coach these younger players. With the limited exposure we have had with them since signing day we are getting to know them as well.

On LeSean McCoy:

It is a little premature to make any strong statements but I was very encouraged from what I saw. He is in good shape. He has done a nice job the last six weeks of studying the offense and his athletic ability showed up today.

On the Quarterbacks:

Bill Stull and Kevan Smith worked along side three walk-ons. All of them are trying to learn the offense more and be ready. At this point I am not concerned about the quarterback situation. We need to coach them both up and when Pat gets back we will coach him up. Bill has the ability to play and become an excellent player. Kevan has been around for a year and we would expect for him in his second year to make progress. We came in knowing we didn't have a fifth-year starter. We need to be quarterback-friendly and give our players the best chance to be successful.

On Stull and Smith working in separate practices:

We are going to keep them separated. Both groups are running the same plays. At this point in time I think Bill (Stull) deserves the opportunity to work in the first session. He is our starter coming out of spring practice. He is a little further ahead right now and Derek Kinder, Nate (Byham), and Conredge (Collins) should be working with the more experienced quarterback. Right now he is the best thing for our football team. They both will get a lot of reps now and once we combine (the groups) and put the pads on Kevan will work in with the first team.

On the Running Backs:

We split time with LaRod Stephens-Howling and Kevin Collier at running back with Shane Brooks at fullback with Conredge Collins. In the afternoon, it was Henry Hynoski and Chris Bova at fullback. We split reps between the three freshman running backs - Shariff Harris, Greg Williams and LeSean McCoy. In two days it will all change, but this time now gives us a chance for these guys to compete and gain experience. It gives us a chance to coach these players and to get to know these players and make them better.

On the Tight Ends:

I really expect Nate Byham to have a great year. I was impressed with John Pelusi. He will be a great addition to our offense. He is a physical player. I didn't realize how good a blocker he really is. Nate will be the all-around guy. I really don't see Nate coming off the field.

On Aundre Wright:

He will be back tomorrow. He had a slight stomach virus.

On Team Health:

No injuries to report. A couple guys got some cramps due to the heat.

On the New Turf Practice Field:

It was good for us to be able to go outside. We would have been inside if we didn't have it. We were able to get outside and use some of the weather conditions in the afternoon practice.
