PITTSBURGH—Pitt’s Scott Orndoff has been named to the midseason watch list for the prestigious John Mackey Award, annually presented to the most outstanding tight end in college football.
Orndoff (Waynesburg, Pa./Seton-LaSalle) is one of 30 players recognized as a viable candidate for this year’s honor by the John Mackey Award Selection Committee.
The 6-foot-5, 255-pound senior has been a force for the Panthers in the pass and run games this season. Through six games he has 14 receptions for 203 yards (14.5 avg.) and two touchdowns. Orndoff’s 74-yard touchdown catch last week against Georgia Tech not only proved critical in the 37-34 victory but also marked the longest reception by a Pitt player this season.
Orndoff has also been an important factor in Pitt’s potent rushing attack. The Panthers are averaging 244.2 yards per game on the ground to rank 19th nationally and second in the ACC.
Semifinalists for the John Mackey Award will be announced on November 14 and the finalists will be named on November 22. The winner will be announced on December 7 with the award presentation taking place live on The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show December 8 on ESPNU.
The Panthers (4-2, 1-1 ACC) are on the road this week at Coastal Division foe Virginia (2-3, 1-0). The game will be televised by the ACC Network (WTAE-TV, Channel 4 in Pittsburgh) and kick off at 12:30 p.m. Click here for a full listing of television affiliates.
