Donald Headlines Pitt Representatives on All-ACC Football Team

Freshman Tyler Boyd broke Larry Fitzgerald's freshman receptions record this season

Freshman Tyler Boyd broke Larry Fitzgerald's freshman receptions record this season

Dec. 2, 2013

PITTSBURGH – Senior DT Aaron Donald leads six Panthers represented on the Panthers’ first All-ACC Football Team, released Monday by the league and voted on by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA).

Donald (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) earned first team honors and was joined by second team honoree freshman wide receiver Tyler Boyd, third team member senior wide receiver Devin Street and honorable mention honorees junior safety Ray Vinopal, senior safety Jason Hendricks and junior offensive lineman Matt Rotheram.

Donald, a finalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Outland Trophy and the Rotary Lombardi Award, was named to the first team following an outstanding season. Donald, who was named the ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week twice, concluded the regular season with a nation-best 2.2 tackles for loss per game and is second in active career total sacks with 28.5.

Boyd (Clairton, Pa./Clairton) became the Pitt all-time freshman receptions leader on Friday against Miami. Entering the game needing just two catches to surpass Larry Fitzgerald's record of 69 catches in 2002, Boyd finished with nine catches for 98 yards and one touchdown. Boyd now has 77 catches on the season and reached the 1,000-yard milestone when he caught his seventh touchdown of the season in the game's final seconds. With 1,001 receiving yards this season, Boyd is the first Panther to achieve that feat since Jon Baldwin in 2009.

Street (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) became the all-time top pass catcher in Pitt history when he hauled in nine receptions at Navy on Oct. 26, surpassing Latef Grim (178 catches from 1998-2000) for the top spot. Street now has 202 career receptions — the first Pitt player to reach the 200-catch milestone — and ranks third all-time at Pitt with 2,901 career receiving yards. He needs 161 yards to surpass the Panthers’ career leader, Antonio Bryant, who had 3,061 yards from 1999-2001.

Boyd and Street are the top duo in the ACC as they are the only pair of teammates to rank in the ACC’s Top 5 in both receiving yards per game and receptions per game.

Hendricks (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hudson Catholic (N.J.)) led the Panthers in tackles for the second consecutive season, finishing the year with 75. The senior also recorded an interception in Pitt’s win at Duke when he returned it 19 yards, giving him eight interceptions for his career.

Vinopal (Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) led the Panthers in interceptions this season with three and added two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Additionally, the senior finished third on the team in tackles with 72.

Rotheram (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) has been Pitt’s most consistent offensive lineman this season and has recorded the most starts by an active Pitt offensive lineman. He started every game this season at right guard and helped the Panthers average 351.8 yards of total offense per game.

The Panthers’ regular season came to a close on Friday against Miami and they await their bowl fate to be decided at the conclusion of this week’s games.
