PITTSBURGH—Pitt sophomore defensive lineman Aaron Donald was named second team All-American by FoxSportsNext.com, the website announced. The team is voted on by Scout.com experts from around the country.
Donald (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) started the season as a primary reserve, but after recording multiple sacks in consecutive contests against Utah (three sacks) and Connecticut (two sacks), he was inserted into the starting lineup for the final four games of the regular season.
With his one sack against West Virginia on Nov. 25, Donald became only the fifth Pitt player since 1991 to tally 10 or more sacks in a season, joining Ricardo McDonald (12 sacks in 1991), Bryan Knight (11.5 in 2000), Joe Clermond (10.5 in 2007) and Brandon Lindsey (10 in 2010). He entered the final game of the regular season against Syracuse with 10 sacks on the year.
Although he didn’t record a sack against the Orange, Donald had five tackles and one tackle for loss in the game. For the year, Donald has 42 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 10 sacks and 11 hurries. He will have a chance to add to those totals as the Panthers secured bowl eligibility with a 33-20 win over Syracuse and will play in the BBVA Compass Bowl.
The game, held at historic Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala., will be played on January 7, 2012 in front of a national ESPN television audience (1 p.m. ET).
The Panthers (6-6, 4-3 Big East) will face Southern Methodist University (7-5, 5-3 Conference USA). It will be just the sixth meeting ever between the two schools and the second in a bowl game. SMU defeated Pitt in the 1983 Cotton Bowl, 7-3. The all-time series is tied, 2-2-1.
