January 1, 1977 - Pitt wins National Championship over Georgia

The Panthers win their ninth national championship defeating the Georgia Bulldogs, 27-3. Tony Dorsett runs for 202 yards in the contest, while quarterback Matt Cavanaugh is named the game's MVP.

Homer Roe returns an interception 108 yards in 1908

Panther defender Homer Roe returns an interception 108 yards for a touchdown in a game against rival West Virginia. The return sets the record for the longest return in Panther history. Roe's mark still stands today.

October 29, 1938 - Pitt gets past Fordham

The University of Pittsburgh and Fordham had quite the rivalry in the 1930's. Both teams played to three consecutive 0-0 ties from 1935-37. In 1938, the Panthers defeated the Rams, 24-13, in the clash between these two football juggernauts.

LeSean McCoy sets Big East freshman rushing record in 2007

LeSean McCoy burst onto the college football scene in 2007 and became a well known name by the end of the season. In his first season at Pitt, McCoy put his name in the record books by breaking the Big East freshman rushing record, held by former Rutgers back Terrell Willis.

December 7, 1963 - Pitt defeats rival Penn State with late fourth quarter touchdown

The Panthers come back to defeat Penn State, 22-21, in a thrilling game at Pitt Stadium. The victory resulted in a 9-1 season and a No. 3 national ranking.

December 26, 2002 - Pitt defeats Oregon State in the Insight Bowl

The Panthers win the 2002 Insight Bowl over the Oregon State Beavers, 38-13. The Panthers finished the year with a record of 9-4, their winningest season since 1982.

Tony Dorsett Wins Heisman Trophy in 1976

Tony Dorsett, a Hopewell, Pa. native, is known as one of the best running backs in Pitt and NFL history. While at Pitt, Dorsett helped lead the Panthers to the 1976 national championship and won the prestigious Heisman Trophy in the same year.

November 8, 2003 - Pitt defeats 5th ranked Virginia Tech

Pitt beats the 5th ranked Hokies at Heinz Field, 31-28. Panther fullback Lousaka Polite scored the winning touchdown with less than a minute to go in the game.
