January 1, 1937 - Pitt beats Washington to win Rose Bowl

Pitt, which finished the season 2nd in the country, defeated the University of Washington, 21-0, to win its first ever Rose Bowl. After three tries, coach Jock Sutherland wins the Rose Bowl with the Panthers.

November 1, 2003 - Pitt wins at Boston College as Fitzgerald sets touchdown mark

The Panthers defeat the Eagles, 24-13, as receiver Larry Fitzgerald sets a record after catching a touchdown pass in his 14th consecutive game. Fitzgerald would go on to catch a touchdown in four more straight games to stretch his streak to 18 games.

November 13, 1999 - Pitt defeats Notre Dame in last game at Pitt Stadium

The Panthers finished off their time at Pitt Stadium in style, defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 37-27, before a sellout crowd of 60,190 people.

Larry Fitzgerald wins the Walter Camp and Biletnikoff awards in 2003

Larry Fitzgerald quickly became a star at the University of Pittsburgh and is considered one of the best ever at his position to play the game. Fitzgerald won the Walter Camp, best player in college football, and Biletnikoff, best receiver, awards in 2003.

October 24, 1936 - Pitt cruises past Notre Dame

The Panthers defeated unbeaten Notre Dame, 26-0, at Notre Dame Stadium. The Panthers dominated the game statistics, amassing fourteen first downs and 310 yards to four first downs and 58 total yards for the Irish.

November 12, 1955 - Panthers crush Mountaineer bowl hopes

The Panthers upset West Virginia, 26-7, at Pitt Stadium. The unexpected victory kept the Mountaineers out of a bowl game and ended their bid for an undefeated season much to the delight of the Panther crowd.


Matchup 4

Pitt's Bobby Grier becomes the first African American player to play in the Sugar Bowl

Grier was a Pitt linebacker and full back who broke the color barrier of the collegiate Sugar Bowl Game. At a time when racial segregation was rampant in the Deep South, Grier's presence in the Sugar Bowl was seen as an extremely significant event.

November 20, 1948 - Pitt shuts out rival Penn State

The Panthers upset the favored Nittany Lions, 7-0, at Pitt Stadium. The Panthers ended the Lions 17-game unbeaten streak to win one of the more dramatic contests between the two rivals.
