MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa.—The Pitt men’s soccer team opened its 2008 fall regular season with a 2-1 loss to Albany Friday at the Robert Morris University Tournament. The contest marked Pitt’s first in the Robert Morris University Tournament, which is being played in Moon Township. RMU and Rider play the second game of today’s doubleheader.
Albany’s Claudio Dantas scored both Great Dane goals. The first came in the 39th minute when Albany’s Milos Jankovic played the ball down the left side to Dantas streaking along the wing. With Pitt goalkeeper Eric Barnes charging from net, Dantas played a shot over Barnes and down into the far corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Great Danes stretched the margin to 2-0 with Dantas' second goal of the contest. The junior jumped on the rebound from a Don Johnson shot on net, heading the ball in from point-blank range.
Pitt cut the lead to 2-1 in the 83rd minute when freshman Sam Luffy collected the ball from an Albany defender. Luffy teed up a right-footed shot from 25 yards that deflected off a defender and went in the right corner of the net. It was Luffy’s first collegiate goal in his first game.
Albany outshot Pitt 13-12 in the contest. Pitt’s Barnes played the first half and made two saves while Jordan Marks made three second half saves.
Pitt will play Rider in its second RMU Tournament game on Sunday at noon.
