CINCINNATI-The Pitt men's soccer team opened its 2007 season with a 1-1 double-overtime tie against UNLV in the first game of the Xavier Soccer Tournament Friday evening. Junior forward E.J. McCormick scored the Panthers' lone goal late in the second half.
McCormick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) broke open a 0-0 game in the 58th minute after receiving a pass from midfielder Eric Jaeger (Bergenfield, N.J./Tenafly) at the top of the box. McCormick's shot sailed into the left corner of the net, putting the Panthers (0-0-1) up 1-0.
UNLV (0-0-1) responded in the 67th minute when Lamar Neagle's shot went over the head of Pitt goalkeeper Jordan Marks (
Neither team was able to score through two overtime periods as the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Last season, Pitt played in five overtime games, three of which went into double overtime.
The Panthers will continue play in the Xavier Soccer Tournament Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against UC-Davis before traveling to Robert Morris for a 4 p.m. game on Sept. 4.
