Men's Soccer Rolls Past Quinnipiac

Sept. 7, 1998

PITTSBURGH -- Behind two goals and an assist from sophomore Reagan Bender, the University of Pittsburgh (2-0-1) rolled past Quinnipiac College (0-1) Sunday afternoon at Pitt Stadium.

Bender, a midfielder from Willow Street, Pa., was moved to forward today to help the Panthers finish scoring opportunities. "We changed our set up, putting three guys up front instead of two," said Bender. "It really helped our spacing, opening up the field to create scoring chances."

Unlike their last match versus Duquesne, which was a 0-0 tie despite out-shooting the Dukes 20-3. Today, Bender weaved through the defense and scored unassisted five minutes into the contest. Six minutes later, Bender volleyed a ball to the middle which was headed in by co-captain Drew Kopp. The goal was the third goal of the season for the senior from Lebanon, Pa. Bender ended the scoring with three minutes remaining in the match. Spencer Barton provided the assist for the final goal.

"When we got chances we finished," said Head Coach Joe Luxbacher. "However, I am more proud today of our defense. Quinnipiac is a very good offensive team."
