PITTSBURGH-The Panthers' men's soccer team traveled to Birmingham, Ala., for the Nike Classic and fell to host UAB, 1-0, in the first of two games on Saturday.

UAB sophomore Jose Rayo scored the game's only goal just 2:27 into the contest on a 12-yard shot that got past Panther goalkeeper Justin Gaul.

Gaul (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./William Tennant) stopped eight shots in the loss, including five in the first half.

Eight cards were given in a very physical game, including five on the Panthers. Clay Haflich (Fort Collins, Colo./Poudre), Mark Sikora (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Toure Weaver (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) were all given yellow cards, while Nate Montgomery (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and Jeff Krause (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) were given red cards and ejected from the game.

The Panthers fell to 1-2 on the season and will face Birmingham Southern in the second game of the Nike Classic on Sunday. Game time is noon.
