PITTSBURGH- The Pitt men's soccer team captured a 1-0 victory over Xavier Wednesday at Founders Field. The Panthers improve to 3-4-2 overall and have not lost a game in their past four contests, while the Musketeers dropped to 3-5-0.

The reigning Big East Conference Rookie of the Week Matt Baker (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem) provided the game's lone goal in the 18th minute of play. Moving quickly downfield, Pitt's offense capitalized when senior Shawn Wildman (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) passed the ball to fellow senior Brendon Smith (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) on the attack. Smith flicked the ball over to Baker who knocked it in from the left side of the net, just past the diving Xavier goalie.

Baker now has three goals on the season and leads the team with seven points. Senior Keeyan Young (North Wales, Pa./Haverford School) had an opportunity to push the Panthers ahead by two in the 55th minute of play, but had his shot was tipped wide left by Xavier goalie Liam Curran. Pitt finished the day with nine shots and five on goal, while the Musketeers racked up 11 shots, 10 of which came in the second half, and only two on goal.

Panther goalie Andy Jorgensen (Doylestown, Pa./Elizabethtown/Central Bucks East) tallied two stops on the day and recorded his third shutout of the season. Jorgensen now has 27 saves for the season.

Pitt returns to Big East play when it travels to South Bend to take on Notre Dame Saturday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m.
