PITTSBURGH- The men's soccer team dropped its fourth consecutive decision in a 2-0 loss to Villanova at Chuck Knox Stadium in Leetsdale, Pa., on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers (1-5, 0-3 Big East) were outshot by the Wildcats (2-3, 1-2), 8-5, in the contest.
Villanova defender Stephen Leaman got the Wildcats on the board at the 8:43 mark when he headed a cross pass by Panther goalkeeper Justin Gaul (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Wiliam Tennent). Joe Caruolo sent the cross pass to Leaman and picked up an assist on the play.
The score remained that way until the 65th minute when Villanova made it a 2-0 game on a goal by Tony Rod. Rod was set up on the right side of the box and deflected an errant Panther pass past Gaul for the score.
Freshman Jeff Krause (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) was the biggest offensive threat for the Panthers with three of the team's five shots. Mark Sikora (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Marco Carrizales (Missouri City, Texas/Alfonso Crutch Charter School) had one shot apiece in the Panther effort.
Gaul made four saves in the effort, giving him 36 for the season in the team's six games.
Pittsburgh will play at Connecticut on Wednesday before returning home to face St. Bonaventure on Sunday. The game will be played at Shaler Area High School at 1 p.m.
