Men's Soccer Loses, 4-1, at Syracuse

PITTSBURGH-After over 36 minutes of scoreless play, the Panthers' men's soccer team couldn't hold off the Syracuse offense and lost, 4-1, at Syracuse Soccer Stadium on Sat., Oct. 6. Kirk Johnson scored the first of his two goals for the Orangemen at the 36:29 mark to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead. Freshman forward Jarett Park got the first of his three assists on the play. Just 1:28 into the second half, Johnson scored again to increase the Orangemen lead to two goals. With just over 20 minutes left in the game, the Panthers got their only goal of the contest when redshirt junior Toure Weaver (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) controlled the rebound off a shot by Nate Montgomery (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and beat Syracuse goalkeeper Anthony Peters. Ryan Hall added an insurance goal with 9:42 left in the game for Syracuse and as time expired, Guido Cristofori beat Panther keeper Justin Gaul (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./William Tennent) to make it a 4-1 game. Montgomery, Bryan Hopper (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) and Chris Churchill (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) had two shots apiece to lead the Panthers.
Pittsburgh is now 3-7 for the season and 0-5 in Big East play. The Panthers will have a week off before returning to action Sun., Oct. 14 when they host St. John's at 1 p.m. The game will be played at Quaker Valley High School.
