Men's Soccer Battles to 3-3 Tie with Seton Hall

October 16, 1998

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Pittsburgh Panther men's soccer team tied 14th-ranked Seton Hall tonight, 3-3, in double overtime at Pitt Stadium. The tie snapped a five-game losing skid for the Panthers.

Greg Strohmann scored first for the Pirates 21 minutes into the contest with an assist by Brian Cuddy. Pittsburgh's Chad Porter (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) scored the first goal for the Panthers ten minutes later off assists by Spencer Barton (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and Phil Matilla (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson). It was Porter's first game back after an injury had sidelined him for five games.

Cuddy put Seton Hall back in the lead with four minutes to go in the first half. Drew Kopp (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) then tied it up for Pittsburgh at the 51:57 mark off a defensive deflection on a corner kick. Matilla put the Panthers ahead at 73:28 with the assist by Porter, before Peter Scavo tied it up again for the Pirates with 11 minutes remaining in the contest.

Pittsburgh's record moves to 4-5-3 overall, 1-4-2 in the Big East. Seton Hall is to 8-2-3 overall and 4-2-2 in conference play.

The Panthers play host to Big East foe Connecticut, the nation's number-one team, on Sunday, Oct. 18 at Pitt Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
