PITTSBURGH- The Pitt men's soccer team will be heading to the Big East Tournament for the first time since 2000 after Wednesday night's 1-0 win over Georgetown in the team's last home game of the 2006 season. The Panthers improved to 5-9-2 overall and 4-4-1 in the Big East, while Georgetown fell to 5-11-0 and 2-8-0 in the Big East.
Coming into the game, both Pitt and Georgetown needed a win or a tie to clinch a spot in post-season play. The Panthers captured that final slot in the Blue Division when freshman Mike McDade (Plum, Pa./Plum) scored his first career goal late in the game.
The score was tied at 0-0 heading into the 85th minute of play when senior Tyler Bastianelli (Bear, Del./St. Mark's) found McDade among traffic in front of the Hoya net. McDade took his second shot of the night as he sent a laser toward Georgetown goalie Andrew Keszler from 30 yards out. McDade's shot flew past a diving Keszler and into the back of the net for the eventual game-winning goal.
In this low-scoring contest, both teams missed chances earlier on to put points on the board. Seniors Keeyan Young (North Wales, Pa./Haverford School) and Tom DeCato (LaGrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) both had shots sail high over the cross bar in the 35th and 82nd minute respectively.
Keszler protected the tied game in the 60th minute when he grabbed freshman Matt Baker's (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem) header before it went into the left side of the net.
Georgetown had two missed opportunities of its own, the first coming in the 48th minute when junior Mike Glaccum shot high over the Panther net. The Hoyas also had a goal called back in the 57th minute due to an offsides call to keep the game tied at 0-0.
Senior goalkeeper Andy Jorgensen (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East/Elizabethtown) recorded his fifth shutout of the season as he tallied five saves on the night, moving his season total to 56 and his 2006 record to 4-4-2.
Pitt will finish out its 2006 regular season on the road as it travels to Seton Hall on Saturday, Oct. 21, for a 1 p.m. game before heading to West Virginia on Monday, Oct. 23, for a 7 p.m. start to make up a game that was postponed earlier in the season.
