Men's soccer Falls to No. 1 UCONN in overtime

Pittsburgh -- The Pittsburgh Panther men's soccer team took first-ranked and undefeated Connecticut into overtime, but fell 1-0 in Big East soccer action today. It was the first time this season the Huskies remained scoreless in regulation play.

Freshman Chris Gbandi scored his first collegiate goal on his only shot of the game to give Connecticut the win 6:45 into the first overtime period. Forward Bobby Rhine was credited with the assist.

It was a tremendous defensive effort for Pittsburgh. The Huskies recorded 22 shots on goal, but could not capitalize in regulation. Panther goalkeeper Chris Hanlon (Davenport, Iowa/Wilson West Lawn) had seven saves on the day.

Defender Travis Kruse (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) and midfielder Drew Kopp (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) led Pittsburgh with two shots apiece. The Panthers fall to 4-6-3 overall, 1-5-2 in the Big East. Connecticut remains undefeated on the season (14-0, 9-0).

Pittsburgh hosts Canisius at Pitt Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 21 in non-conference soccer action. Game time is 7:30.
