PITTSBURGH-The Pittsburgh Panthers and Robert Morris Colonials played to a 0-0 tie in 120 minutes of action on Wednesday at the North Atlantic Complex on the Robert Morris campus.
Panther goalkeeper Justin Gaul (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./William Tennent) recorded his second shutout of the season and the 13th of his career in the scoreless tie, making six saves.
Pittsburgh outshot Robert Morris, 21-14, for the game, including a 7-2 margin in the two overtime periods.
The Panthers had the best chance to score on the afternoon, but Chris Churchill (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) was stopped on a penalty kick in the early moments of the second half by Colonial keeper Matt Henson. Henson also picked up a shutout in making a season-high 11 saves.
Bryan Hopper (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) had a game-high six shots to lead the Panthers with Churchill and Miles Dowiak (Houston, Texas/Mayde Creek) chipping in three apiece.
Nick Goosen led Robert Morris with four shot attempts while Jamie and Rhian Dodds had three apiece. One highlight for the Panthers was the return of Peter Veltri (Washington, Pa./Trinity) to the lineup. Veltri had missed the previous seven games with a leg injury after scoring five points in the Panthers' first five games of the season.
Pittsburgh will travel to Blacksburg, Va. to face Virginia Tech on Sun., Oct. 28 before returning home for the season's final three games: Oct. 31 vs. Bucknell (7 p.m.), Nov. 3 vs. Boston College (1 p.m.) and Nov. 6 vs. Georgetown (7:30 p.m.). All three games will be played at Founders Field in Indianola, Pa.
