QUEENS, N.Y.- The Pitt men's soccer team fell 1-0 to St. John's in the opening round of the Big East playoffs Wednesday evening at Belson Stadium. The loss ended the Panthers 2006 season with a 5-11-2 overall record and a 4-5-1 mark in the Big East. The Red Storm advanced to the quarterfinals and will face defending the Big East Champion UConn Huskies on Saturday, Oct. 28.
As the No. 3 seed in the Red division, St. John's came into the game with a 13-3-3 all-time record against Pitt, the No. 6 in the Blue Division, which dates back to 1985. In the last match up between the two teams, it was the Red Storm edging the Panthers 1-0, just as they did in their meeting in 2006.
Senior Tyler Bastianelli (Bear, Del./St. Mark's) had the first opportunity for the Panthers in the 26th minute when he took a shot at the Red Storm net. Goalie Jason Landers tallied one of his two saves of the night to preserve the 0-0 score.
In the 32nd minute, it was junior Matt Langton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) who attempted to get the Panthers on the board, but his shot flew wide left of the net.
Six minutes later, at the 38:36 mark, it was St. John's who knocked in the eventual deciding goal. Freshman Tadeu Terra passed the ball up-field to fellow freshman Ryan Soroka. Soroka's shot from 15 yards out found the back of the Panther net for his sixth goal of the season.
Panther freshman Matt Baker (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem) attempted to even the score in the 62nd minute, but his shot was also grabbed by Landers who preserved his ninth shutout of the season.
Pitt was out shot 15-7 in the loss, while goalkeeper Andy Jorgensen (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East/Elizabethtown) earned five saves in his final game in goal for the Panthers.
