Oct. 28, 2008
INDIANOLA, Pa.—The Panthers tied the No. 15 ranked University of Connecticut 2-2 in double overtime, Tuesday night at Founders Field. The tie puts Pitt’s overall record at 7-6-3 and 3-5-2 in the Big East. The Huskies are now at 8-3-6 overall and 5-3-2 in Big East play.
Pitt took an early 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when Mike McDade scored off an indirect kick from 25 yards out. Sam Luffy and E.J. McCormick were credited with the assists on the play.
UConn tied the match early in the second period when Joe Boa collected a pass from Tony Cascio and placed the ball into the lower left corner of the net.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the final minutes. With just over two minutes left senior E.J. McCormick crossed the ball to the middle of the penalty box and Ian Farnsworth one-timed the ball into the goal to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead. The assist was McCormick’s second on the night.
The Panthers looked like they were about to upset the No. 15 ranked Huskies until Toni Stahl’s shot from the right side found the lower left corner of the goal with 13 seconds left in the game. The assist was made by Tony Cascio.
Both teams were unable to score in the two overtime periods and the Panthers settled for a tie against the UConn.
Pitt was outshot 19-11 in the game but they were able to register two more shots on goal than the Huskies. Goalkeeper Eric Barnes made four saves on the night.
Pitt has an opportunity to advance to the Big East Tournament (their last appearance was in 2006).
