INDIANOLA, Pa. — University of Pittsburgh men’s soccer team snapped its 14-game winless streak here in its final home match of the 2009 season against Seton Hall University 3-2, on senior recognition night here at Founder’s Field.
Senior Chris Wilcox (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Peters Township) netted the game-winner with just four minutes left, sending a shot past a leaping Paul McHenry into the top left corner of the net. Fellow Senior Matt Baker (Bethlehem, Pa./ Allentown Central Catholic) and redshirt Junior Alex Betancourt (Syosset, N.Y./ Nassau J.C./ Stony Brook) are each credited with an assist on the goal.
Pitt (2-12-2,1-8-1 Big East) took an early 1-0 lead in the 18th minute of the opening half when Betancourt’s shot from just outside the box found its way to the left corner of the goal. Four minutes later the Pirates (4-9-3, 1-6-3) evened the score at 1-1, with a little help from the Panther defense. The goal was credited to Samuel Petrone after a failed attempt to clear the ball the Pitt backfield.
The Panthers regained the lead at 2-1, following Junior Ryan Brode’s (Setauk, N.Y./ St. John the Baptist) goal in the 40th minute. Brode’s header from the middle of the box came off a crossing pass from Junior Terry Boland (Brentwood, Pa./ Seton La Salle).
Seton Hall again tied the game at 2-2, in the 81st minute when Dritan Sela’s shot hit the crossbar and found the back of the net. Andrew Welker was given an assist on the goal scored.
Senior Zack Matthews (Plum, Pa./Plum) made seven saves on the night in the net for the Panthers.
Pitt will close out the 2009 season on Saturday the 31st against Marquette. Match time on Halloween night is set for 8 p.m. —30—
