Men's Soccer Upends No. 13 Boston College

8/30/2003

Keeyan Young nets game winning goal midway through the first half, while Justin Lowery earns first career victory and shutout in goal

  • Boston College Boxscore

PITTSBURGH – Keeyan Young scored a first half goal and Pittsburgh used a stingy defense to upset No. 13 Boston College Saturday at Founders Field. Pittsburgh starts its season at 1-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the Big East while Boston College falls to 0-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the Big East.

Sophomore Keeyan Young (North Wales, Pa./Haverford School) netted the game’s only goal off a solid sequence of passing from freshmen teammates Johnathan Clow (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison Comprehensive) and Brendon Smith (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East). Clow pushed the ball into the corner, and then flipped it ahead to Smith, who then crossed the ball to the open foot of Young who blasted the ball into the lower left corner of the net. Both Clow and Smith were credited with their first career assists, while Young scored his first goal of the season and the sixth of his career. The game-winner from Young also marks the third time in Young’s career that he netted a game winning goal.

Also highlighting the Panthers’ victory was redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Justin Lowery (Atlanta Ga./Paideia School), who notched his first shutout in his first career collegiate start. The solid play of Lowery saw him face 17 shots while finishing with five saves.

Last year’s Big East regular season and tournament champion, Boston College never found its rhythm as the young Panthers continually made defensive stops to preserve the shutout. A team that advanced last year to the NCAA’s Elite Eight, the Eagles outshot (17-9) and doubled Pittsburgh’s total on corner kicks (6-3) but was still unable to find the net.

Senior defender and team captain Clay Haflich (Fort Collins, Colo./Poudre) anchored the youthful Panthers’ defense as he made numerous plays to halt possible shots on goal.

Pittsburgh next plays Hartwick in the Mayor’s Cup tournament hosted by Oneonta State University on September 6.
