Two Men's Soccer Players Earn Big East Weekly Honors 9/2/2003
PITTSBURGH—For their defensive efforts in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over defending Big East Champion Boston College, senior defender Clay Haflich (Fort Collins, Colo./Poudre) and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Justin Lowery (Atlanta, Ga./Paideia School) were honored as Big East Players of the Week for the week of Aug. 25-31. Haflich, the team’s captain, was named the Big East Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career. Anchoring the youthful Panthers’ defense in the victory, Haflich turned in a solid defensive effort that translated into Pittsburgh’s first shutout of the season. Haflich’s numerous defensive stands and blocked shots paved the way for the Panthers’ upset victory. Lowery, who earned his first collegiate victory and shutout by making five saves in his first career start, was named the Goalkeeper of the Week. This is Lowery’s first such honor and marks only the second time in The Panthers return to action Sept. 6 when they travel to the Mayors Cup hosted by
