NIAGARA, NY—Keeyan Young led the Pittsburgh Men’s Soccer team over Niagara Wednesday afternoon at Niagara Field when he scored the game’s only goal in the 45th minute of play to give the Panthers a 1-0 victory.
The victory raises Pittsburgh’s overall record to 3-7-0, while the loss drops the Purple Eagles to 0-6-1.
Young’s (North Wales, Pa./Haverford School) goal was set up by a pass from freshman midfielder Shawn Wildman (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), who chipped the ball forward to Young breaking down the near sideline. Young controlled the ball while dribbling past a Niagara defender only to then put a move on Dan O’Shea the Purple Eagles goalkeeper to finish the ball in the middle of the net for his third goal of the season. The goal by Young is his second game-winning goal of the season and the fourth of his career.
Pittsburgh redshirt sophomore goal keeper Justin Lowery (Atlanta, Ga./Paideia School) earned his third career victory while facing 12 shots and making six saves en route to his third career shutout.
The Panthers offense clicked as it outshot Niagara 15-12 and received more corner kicks (9-5). Despite the one goal performance by Pittsburgh’s offense, the Panthers had numerous scoring opportunities and controlled the tempo of the game from the start.
Pittsburgh returns to action Sunday, Oct. 5th for a Big East showdown at Founders Field with No. 8/4 Notre Dame. Game time is set for 12 noon.
