PITTSBURGHNo. 8 Notre Dame defeated the Pittsburgh Men’s Soccer team 2-0 in a Big East Conference game Sunday afternoon at Founders Field in Indianola, Pa. The victory by Notre Dame lifts its season record to 7-1-3 including a record of 3-1-1 in Big East play, while the loss by Pittsburgh drops its season record to 3-8-0 overall and 1-4-0 in the Big East.

Notre Dame got on the board early in the fourth minute of play as Chad Riley booted a corner kick to the head of Kevin Goldthwaite, who flicked the ball down to the feet of Justin Detter for the 1-0 lead.

Notre Dame capped the game’s scoring in the 72nd minute when Kevin Richards pushed the ball deep into the Pittsburgh zone. Richards dropped the ball off with Greg Martin, who then crossed the ball to Riley for the final Irish goal.

Marco Carrizales (Missouri City, Texas/Alfonso Crutch) lead the Panthers with two shots, but despite some quality scoring chances for Pittsburgh, Notre Dame’s defense would hold the Panthers’ offense scoreless for the first time this season in Big East play.

Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Justin Lowery (Atlanta, Ga./Paideia School) established a new career high with nine saves on 13 shots.

The Fighting Irish held the edge in shots 13-5 and recorded six more (8-2) corner kicks than the Panthers.

Pittsburgh returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 8th for a non-conference match against Bucknell at Founders Field. Game time is 7p.m..
