Providence Defeats Men's Soccer 1-0

Despite a strong defensive effort by Pittsburgh, Providence defeated the Panthers 1-0 on a late goal.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Providence College defeated the Pittsburgh Men’s Soccer team 1-0 in Big East play Saturday afternoon.
Pittsburgh (5-9-0 overall, 2-5-0 Big East) matched Providence (6-5-2, 4-2-1) with 10 shots, but was unable to capitalize on any of its scoring chances. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Justin Lowery (Atlanta, Ga./Paideia School) made five saves on 10 shots. Despite the strong defensive effort by Lowery and the Panthers, Providence scored the game’s only goal in the 81st minute of play to earn the 1-0 victory.
Providence junior Carlos Suero’s goal came off of an indirect kick by Eoin Lynch that caromed off the Pittsburgh defensive wall. Suero then lofted the ball over the Pittsburgh defense and over the head of Lowery.
Freshman midfielder Mike Cunha (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) led the Panthers with three shots, while Bryan Headrick (Scotdale, Pa./Southmoreland), Marco Carrizales (Missouri City, Texas/Alfonso Crutch) and Keeyan Young (North Wales, Pa./Haverford School) each recorded two shots.
Pittsburgh returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 21st as it travels to Morgantown, W.Va. for a Big East match against rival West Virginia University. Game time is scheduled for 7p.m.
