BLACKSBURG, Va.The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team handed the visiting Panthers a 6-0 defeat in Big East soccer action on Wednesday evening. The loss dropped Pittsburgh to 5-11-1 overall and 2-6-1 in Big East play, while the win improves the Hokies’ season mark to 12-4-1, including a 6-3-0 mark in conference contests.

The Hokies opened the scoring early in the 16th minute of play when Peer Rogge finished a penalty shot in the right corner of the net for the lone goal of the first half. Rogge’s goal proved to be all the hosts would need as Pittsburgh would be held scoreless for the sixth time this season.

After a tight first half, Virginia Tech erupted in the second frame to add five goals to give the Hokies their 6-0 victory.

Virginia Tech outshot the Panthers for the game, 27-6, while also registering more corner kicks (8-0). Pittsburgh’s offense was held in check with junior midfielder Marco Carrizales (Missouri City, Texas/Alfonso Crutch) leading the way with two shots.

Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Justin Lowery (Atlanta, Ga./Paideia School) made two saves through nearly 84 minutes of play before being replaced late in the game by redshirt freshman Jason Cooke (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown). Cooke recorded one save during his six plus minutes of action.

Pittsburgh returns to action Sunday, November 2, for its final game of the season when it hosts Syracuse University in Big East Conference play at Founders Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
