Junior Billy Brush Earns Men's Soccer Big East Offensive Player of the Week

11/3/2003

Brush's first career hat trick earns him his first career Big East Conference honor.

PITTSBURGHBy recording his first career hat trick, junior midfielder/forward Billy Brush earned his first career Big East Conference honor as he was named the Big East Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning.

Brush (Olney, Md./Sherwood/Virginia Wesleyan) became the fourth Pittsburgh student-athlete this season to earn conference honors, joining senior defender Clay Haflich (Fort Collins, Colo./Poudre) as Defender of the Week on Sept.1, Justin Lowery (Atlanta, Ga./Paideia School) as Goalkeeper of the Week on Sept. 1 and Keeyan Young (North Wales, Pa./Haverford School) Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 13th.

Brush, who recorded his first career multi-goal game on Sunday, recorded the first Pittsburgh hat trick since Spencer Barton netted three goals against Notre Dame in the 2000 season. With the three goals against Syracuse, Brush became the 11th Panthers player to accomplish such a feat while registering the 17th hat trick in Pittsburgh men’s soccer history.

Entering the game in the 33rd minute of play, Brush ignited the Panthers’ offense that was trailing 1-0. Brush tied the game at 1-1 in the 44th minute. After Syracuse scored an early goal in the second half, Brush knotted the score again less than two minutes later. Then in the 60th minute, Brush completed his hat trick giving Pittsburgh the 3-2 victory. It was Pittsburgh’s first win over Syracuse since the 2000 season, and marked the third time this season that the Panthers’ offense netted at least three goals.

Pittsburgh finished its 2003 season with an overall mark of 6-11-1, including a 3-6-1 mark in Big East Conference contests.
