PITTSBURGH-The Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team saved its best competition for the last dual meet of the 2001-02 season and the No. 17 Panthers lost to No. 12 Virginia, 137-104, for its first defeat. Pittsburgh lost eight of the 13 events, something that it had not been accustomed to in its previous seven dual meets and two team competitions. The Panthers did sweep the two diving events with sophomore Matthew Schwartz (Huntington, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) finishing in first place on the 1-meter board with 292.8 points and senior Michael Wells (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) winning the 3-meter competition with 333.9 points. The other three victories for the Panthers came in the 100 and 200 freestyle events and the 400 freestyle relay. Senior Max Von Bodungen (Malmo, Sweden/Borgarskolan) swam an NCAA B-provisional time of 1:39.01 in the 200 free to top Virginia's Adam Kerpelman by just 0.53 seconds. Junior Mike Grube (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) swam a Big East-best time in the 100 free by getting to the wall in 44.64 seconds, just four-hundredths of a second faster than the Cavaliers' Luke Anderson, who was up by 0.36 seconds after the first 50 yards. In the final event of the meet, the team of Joshua Quinn (Hamburg, N.Y./Orchard Park), Stephen Kilroy (Allentown, Pa./Parkland), Michael Demos (McKeesport, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) and Eric Limkemann (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:11.73. The top team of Grube, Adam Webber (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest), Raymond Brush (Katy, Texas/Katy/Nebraska) and Miah Heath (Estes Park, Colo./Estes Park) was disqualified in the last 50 yards.
Pittsburgh will host the Pittsburgh College Invite on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. at Trees Pool although many of the Panthers will not be competing. The Big East Championships will be held Feb. 21-23 in Long Island, N.Y., as the 17th-ranked Panthers attempt to win their sixth consecutive conference title.
