PITTSBURGH-For the second meet in as many days, the Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team completed a clean sweep of its opponent. This time, the foe was Big East member Syracuse and the final margin was 196-45 in favor of the Panthers. The Panthers even managed to earn a second-place finish in all but two of the events, which made the victory easier. Michael Wells (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) and Blair Beal (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) got things started with wins in the 3-meter and 1-meter diving, respectively. Wells picked up 297.38 points to earn his first top score in the 3-meter event. Beal won on the 1-meter board with 286.35 points, narrowly edging out Wells. The Panthers also took both relay events, the 400 medley and 400 freestyle, with times of 3:23.69 and 3:10.53, respectively. In the medley, Steve Siler (Chicago, Ill./Westmont), Raymond Brush (Katy, Texas/Katy/Nebraska), Max von Bodungen (Malmo, Sweden/Borgarskolan) and Adam Webber (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) won by over five seconds while Webber, Michael Demos (McKeesport, Pa./Elizabeth Forward), Michael Hand (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and Miah Heath (Estes Park, Colo./Estes Park) had a tougher time in topping Syracuse by just 0.59 seconds in the 400 free.
In the five individual freestyle events, five different Panthers came up with victories. In the 50 free, Demos won his second consecutive race with a time of 21.18, beating Heath by 0.54 seconds. Heath came back to win the 100 free in 47.17, 0.87 faster than Mike Anstrom of Syracuse. Siler had a strong third 50 yards in winning the 200 free over teammate Eric Limkemann (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan). Siler was behind after the first quarter but came back and pulled ahead over the next 100 meters to win. Limkemann earned his victory in the 500 free with a time of 4:37.47 while freshman Hannes Kohnke (Malmo, Sweden/Borgarskolan) swam the 1000 free in 9:50.82, nearly 20 seconds faster than the nearest competitor.
Other winners for the Panthers included Brush in the 200 IM (1:54.68), von Bodungen in the 200 butterfly (1:52.82), Siler in the 200 back (1:49.93), and Arda Kostem (Ankara, Turkey/Middle East Technology) in the 200 breast with a time of 2:08.74. Pittsburgh is now 2-0 on the season and including the Notre Dame relays, has won an astounding 37 of 38 total events thus far in 2001-02. |
