PITTSBURGH- The Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team only won half of the eight events on Saturday evening but built a 377-point lead over Missouri heading into the third and final day of the Pittsburgh Invitational.

The Panthers lead the Tigers, 1,125-748, with Ohio State in third place (339.5) and Miami in fourth (252.5).

Miami's lone victory came in the finals' first event of the evening, the 1-meter diving competition. The Hurricanes' Imre Lengyel won with 359.70 points as the 'Canes had three of the top four divers. Michael Wells (Downington, Pa./Downington) of Pittsburgh finished in third place.

Pittsburgh edged out Ohio State in the 200 medley relay as Steve Siler (Chicago, Ill./Westmont), Randy Gertenbach (El Centro, Calif./Paradise Valley), Max Von Bodungen (Malmo, Sweden/Borgarskolan) and Miah Heath (Estes Park, Colo./Estes Park) swam it in 1:32.50, just 0.41 seconds faster than Ivan Petrovic, Carlos Oliva, Nick Rees and Nick Cheney.

Matt Ferrarelli kept up his strong performances of the weekend by winning the 400 IM in 3:53.81, more than seven seconds faster than Pittsburgh's Eric Limkemann (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan).

Missouri got another victory for the Tigers in the 100 butterfly when he slipped past Heath by six-hundredths of a second, 49.70-49.76. The Panthers also had the fourth through seventh place finishers in the race.

Von Bodungen got the Panthers a win in the 200 freestyle when he swam a b-cut time of 1:38.97 to top Ohio State's Travis Carver (1:40.94). Adam Webber (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) finished in third place with a time of 1:41.08.

Gertenbach and Raymond Brush (Katy, Texas/Katy/Nebraska) finished 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke for the Panthers with times of 56.49 and 57.23, respectively. Oliva finished in third place for the Buckeyes.

Ferrarelli got his second individual event win of the evening in the 100 backstroke, beating out Petrovic by 0.15 seconds with a time of 50.66 seconds. Ken Shelhorse (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) was Pittsburgh's top finisher in third place with a time of 51.05 seconds.

 

 

The final event of the evening, the 800 freestyle relay was dominated by Pittsburgh's team of Heath, Limkemann, Webber and Von Bodungen, who swam it in 6:42.09. That time was 7.73 seconds faster than the next-best team, Ohio State's David Paul, Dan Vitina, Vladi Dusil and Carver.

The final day of competition starts with prelims at 9 a.m. and finishes with finals at 3 p.m.
