Nov. 18, 2001
Sunday Finals Results
PITTSBURGH- When the final relay was over, the Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team had scored a lopsided victory over Missouri, Ohio State and Miami (Fla.) in the Pittsburgh Invitational and it left little doubt it should be considered among the top 15 teams in the nation. The Panthers had 1,573 points, 522 better than the second-place Tigers (1,051). Ohio State finished in third place with 511.5 points and Miami had 357.5. Pittsburgh won all five relays during the competiton, including Sunday night's 400 freestyle relay and 13 of 18 total swimming events. The 400 free relay was handled by Raymond Brush (Katy, Texas/Katy/Nebraska), Adam Webber (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest), Miah Heath (Estes Park, Colo./Estes Park) and Max Von Bodungen (Malmo, Sweden/Borgarskolan) in a time of 3:02.24. Ohio State's 'A' team finished in a close second, just 1.04 seconds behind the Panthers. Pittsburgh started out with a victory as well on Sunday evening in the 1650 freestyle when Eric Limkemann (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) swam it in a time of 15:30.71 to top Missouri's Dane Pedersen by almost 11 seconds. Senior Steve Siler (Chicago, Ill./Westmont) won the 200 backstroke in 1:47.83 over Ohio State's Ivan Petrovic (1:48.48) and the Panthers' Ken Shelhorse (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) (1:48.93). Von Bodungen beat out Heath in the 100 freestyle event in a time of 45.50, just 0.36 seconds faster than his teammate's finals time. He was also scheduled to be scratched out of the 200 fly finals but wasn't and finished in second place behind Nick Rees of Ohio State in a closely-contested race. Just three-tenths of a second separated the two swimmers. The other individual winners were Pittsburgh's Randy Gertenbach (El Centro, Calif./Paradise Valley) in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:01.92 and the Hurricanes' Imre Lengyel in the platform diving competition.
The Panthers will be off until the 2002 calendar year in intercollegiate competition but will have a Christmas club meet over the holiday break.
