Coach Shelby joins the Panthers this season for his first as an assistant coach for throws, replacing two-year assistant coach Amanda Walker. Shelby, a 2006 graduate of and five-year thrower at Kent State, will bring an abundance of experience and knowledge to Pitt.
While at Kent State, Coach Shelby competed in both indoor and outdoor track, throwing the discus, shot put and hammer. He was a four-time outdoor regional qualifier in the discus, as well as a three-time outdoor regional qualifier in the shot put and a one-time outdoor regional qualifier in the hammer. As a sophomore, he captured the 2003 Mid-American Conference outdoor track and field discus title. Coach Shelby holds the ninth-best all-time outdoor weight throw at Kent State, as well as the second-best all-time outdoor shot put throw in school history.
Throughout his college career, Coach Shelby found success in indoor competition as well. He was an indoor NCAA provisional qualifier in the shot put in his junior and redshirt senior years. He was also crowned the 2004 MAC indoor track and field shot put champion. That same year as a junior, he placed first in the shot put at the Central Collegiate Championships. Shelby also holds top marks at Kent State in the indoor shot put (third all-time) and discuss, with the fifth-best all-time throw.
A 2001 graduate of Westlake High School in West Lake, Ohio, Coach Shelby was a three-year member of the track and field team. He was part of two conference championship teams and one district championship team. Along with his accolades in track and field, Coach Shelby was also a Division I football recruit until he tore his ACL before his senior season.
