Jan. 17, 2010

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.—Junior Antony Hobwana won the 60M dash, as the University of Pittsburgh men’s track and field team competed in the PSU Northeast Challenge this weekend.

“It was our first meet after break, and I am pleased with the results,” Head Coach Alonzo Webb said. “Our sprinters and jumpers did a great job today.”

Hobwana led three Panthers in the finals of the 60M dash, and turned in a personal best with a winning time of 6.84. Next, senior Sam Perkins claimed fourth and sophomore Idris Kasumu was seventh.

Sophomore Kevin Wilbank just missed the finals of the 60M dash, tying for ninth in the event. He would also place seventh in the 200M dash, while Kasumu tied for ninth in that same event.

Hobwana and Perkins were also members of the 4x400 relay team that finished eighth overall. Sophomore Jerome Lowery lead-off of the squad, while sophomore Jermaine Lowery ran the second leg of the relay.

In the 500M dash, sophomore Dontave Cowsette recorded a third-place finish (1:03.55).

Making an impression in this year’s distance lineup, sophomore Elliot Rhodes placed fourth in the 800M run with a personal-best of 1:52.85. Classmate Greg Kareis also recorded a fourth-place performance on the day, turning in a time of 8:28.19 in the 3000M run.

Additionally, juniors Josh Christopher and Teddy Miller placed eighth and 11th overall in the 3000M run.

In the field events, sophomore Folarin Ijelu placed third overall in the long jump and triple jump. Senior Brandon Turner also placed in the top-five of the triple jump, while senior Nick Malenka was seventh in the pole vault.

Also claiming two top-10 finishes, junior Garrett Larkin finished fifth in the shot put and sixth in the weight throw.

Other top-20 performances included Jerome Lowery (200M dash), sophomore Kurt Barnhart (shot put and weight throw) and senior Kyle Kaminski (3000M run).

The Panthers travel to Urbana-Champaign, Ill. next, for the Carle/Health Alliance Classic on Saturday, Jan. 23.
