PITTSBURGH-A group of athletes from the University of Pittsburgh men’s and women’s track and field teams traveled to Ashland, Ohio, on Saturday for the Ashland University Alumni Open.
Freshman Taylor Slaney set a meet record as well as a personal season record in the javelin as she won the event with a throw of 44.28 meters.
Freshmen Brooke Shasteen (38.42 meters) and Casey Meier (37.68 meters) and sophomore Jessica Rocco (37.62 meters) finished fifth through seventh in the javelin behind Slaney.
“I am proud of how Taylor competed in today’s weather,” Pitt assistant coach Chip Brundage said regarding Slaney’s performance in the conditions that included rain and snow. “We performed well as a team in cold temperatures today.”
Freshman Brittany Lightfoot finished eighth in the shot put with a toss of 12.30 meters while also finishing 11th in the in the discus (40.56 meters).
Freshman Haley Springman finished just behind Lightfoot in the discus, finishing 13th with a throw of 39.68 meters.
On the men’s side, senior Kurt Barnhart finished eighth in the discus (44.41 meters).
The Panthers will return to action next weekend at the Big East Championships in Tampa, Fla.
“We’re excited heading into the Big East Championships,” Brundage said. “We’re looking forward to a good performance there.”
