Panthers Dominate the Relays at the Golden Flash Gala

KENT, Ohio – The University of Pittsburgh men's and women's track and field teams both claimed first place in the 4x400m relays on Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Golden Flash Gala hosted by Kent State University. 

The Pitt 'A' squad in the women’s 4x4 won the event in a time of 3:49.30, while the Pitt ‘A’ squad for the men’s 4x4 team concluded the afternoon for the Panthers as they won the event in a time of 3:10.15.

The Panthers went on to win nine of the events on the second day of competition. The women took seven first place finishes of their own, highlighted by Taranisha Taylor who won the 60m dash in 7.51 and the 60m hurdles in 8.41, setting career bests in both events. 

The 300m dash was led by Zoey Whittington as she crossed the finish line in a time of 39.45. Evann Thompson then won the 800m run in 2:16.58, finishing seven seconds ahead of second place. 

In the jumps, the Panthers claimed the top three spots in the triple jump, led by Julia Koloski (12.66m) as Ashley Corum (12.30m) took second place and Paige Lumley finished in third (11.81m). Koloski also won the long jump with a distance of 5.73m.

On the men’s side, All-American Carvin Nkanata won the 300m dash in 32.60 as he led the Panthers to a 1-2-3 finish, followed by Brycen Spratling and Micah Murray. Nkanata won the event for a second year in a row, breaking the school record and his previous best time of 33.13 set at the 2012 Golden Flash Gala. Nkanata also placed second in the 60m dash in 6.92.

Dustin Fuller then captured third place in the 400m dash, crossing the line in a time of 49.60. Chris Spadaro highlighted the jumps on the men’s side with a second place finish in the long jump (6.65m) and taking fourth in the triple jump (13.87m). 


 

 

In all, the women's squad reached 5 ACC Championship qualifying times, while the men's side achieved four. 

The Panthers are back in action after winter break when Pitt resumes action at Penn State on Jan. 11.
