Pittsburgh's Track and Field Teams Have Strong Showing at Clemson Invitational

The Panthers women's team won the event with 13 first-place finishers, while the men's team placed third with two first-place winners.

CLEMSON, S.C.Pittsburgh’s outdoor track and field teams competed this past weekend at the Clemson Invitational. The women’s team won the event with 13 first-place finishers while the men’s team placed third.

 

The Panthers produced 10 regional qualifying marks as well as over 30 performances that qualified for the Big East Championships on May 1-2 in New Brunswick, N.J.

 

Tamara McGill finished with two first-place honors, including the 100-meter hurdles and the high jump. Amanda Walker also placed first in both the shot put and hammer throw.

 

Other winners were Lamoy Stephens (100 meters), Kimberly Lyles (200 meters), Trenace Elliot (400 meters), Maureen McCandless (1,500 meters), Lauren Shaffer (5,000 meters), Elizabeth Bayne (400 meter hurdles), Nicola Angstadt (3000 meter steeplechase), Marissa Dudek (pole vault) and Jill Knopsnyder (javelin).

 

On the men’s side, Troy Roberson (400 meters) and Mike Kennedy (javelin) each posted first-place finishes. Michael Long finished second in the 3000-meter steeplechase while Anthony Bonura was second in the javelin. The 4x400 meter relay team of Anthony Pelham, Kareem Cousar, Deon Bascom and Chris Anderson placed second.

 

Kennedy’s throw of 69.94 meters in the javelin event ranks as the 10th-best score this year in the NCAA.

 

The Panthers return to action this week at they travel to the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn.
