PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior sprinter Carvin Nkanata has been named the Big East Male Track Athlete of the Week for his performance at the Aggie Invitational, as announced by league officials on Tuesday afternoon.
Nkanata ran a career-best time of 21.03 in the 200 meter dash at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T last weekend. He was the first collegiate finisher in the event and placed second overall. Nkanata was one tenth of a second faster than his previous career-best which he set when he won the Big East Indoor Championship.
He was also ran the second leg of the winning 4x400 meter relay team that posted its fastest time of the outdoor season of 3:08.64. The Summerville, N.C. native placed third overall in the 400 meter dash with a time 46.67 as well.
This is Nkanata’s second time being named the Big East Track Athlete of the Week and his first time of the outdoor season. Notre Dame’s Rebecca Tracy was named the Female Track Athlete of the Week, while UConn’s Cody Unger and Victoria Flowers are the Male and Female Field Athletes of the Week.
Nkanata leads the sprinters and field athletes into the Legacy Classic hosted by Morgan State this weekend, April 19-20 in Baltimore, Md. Pitt will send its long distance squad to the Larry Ellis Invitational hosted by Princeton.
