Pittsburgh Track and Field Has Success at the Big East Championships

The women's team placed second, while the men's squad finished sixth.

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh outdoor track and field teams competed in the Big East Championships this weekend at New Brunswick, NJ. The women’s team finished second with 107 points and the men placed sixth with 54 points.

            Senior Trenace Elliott (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) won the 400 meters with a time of 53.84. Junior Tamara McGill (Franklin Park, NJ/Franklin Township) won the heptathlon for the second year in a row with 5,375 points. Sophomore Marissa Dudek (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) placed second in the pole vault with a score of 3.75 meters, while senior Elizabeth Bayne (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan) finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.25. Junior Kimberly Lyles (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) placed third in the 100 meters and 200 meters with times of 11.71 and 24.04, respectively. Junior Amanda Walker (Hampton, Va./Bethel High) captured a third-place finish in the discus throw with a throw of 48.34 meters and finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 14.33 meters. The 4x100 meter relay team of Lamoy Stephens (Westmoreland, Jamaica), Elliott, Nicole Vann (Newport News, Va./Menchville) and Lyles placed second running a time of 45.87, while the 4x400 relay team of Stephens, Bayne, Lyles and Elliott placed third with a time of 3:41:90.

            For the men, sophomore Troy Roberson (Westminster, Pa./William Tennent) placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 47.37. Freshman Justin Clickett (Union City, Pa./Union City Area) finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 16.83 meters, while senior teammate Mike Stellefson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) wasn’t far behind with a fifth-place finish and a throw of 16.03 meters. Senior Mike Kennedy (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 61.47 meters. The 4x800 relay team of Deon Bascom (Newark, NJ/Essex Community College), Andrew Zang (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), Jeryl Wilborn (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) and Eric Fleming (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) finished third with a time of 7:29.92.

            The Panthers compete May 13-16 at the ECAC/IC4A Championships held in New Haven, Conn.
