PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Spearheaded by the sixth fastest men’s 4x400 meter relay team in the country, the University of Pittsburgh track and field team is set to compete at the 2013 Big East Outdoor Track and Field Championship Meet this weekend hosted by Rutgers.

The Panthers will look to recreate their success from the Big East Indoor Championship Meet in which Pitt claimed four individual titles and one relay title.

The 4x400 indoor championship relay team of Micah Murray, Carvin Nkanata, Olivier Philogene and Brycen Spratling broke the school record last weekend at the Penn Relays and ran the nation’s sixth fastest time, crossing the line in 3:04.16. In February they set the Indoor Big East Championship Meet record in that event and will have the target on their backs this weekend.

Individually, Nkanata holds the conferences’ fastest 400 time of the outdoor season at 46.67, and Brett Millar has the furthest javelin distance of the season with his personal-record throw of 69.31m which he set last week at the Penn Relays.

Spratlin will also contend for titles this weekend as he, Nkanata and Micah Murray are all entered in the 200 meter dash, the 400 meter dash, the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays.

Along with Millar in the field events, Andrew Wells will be heard from in the discus and the hammer throw, both events in which he is the Pitt school record holder.

On the women’s side, Jonnique Lawrence will try to defend her 200 meter dash indoor title, while she and Arielle Fonrose will compete in the that event, along with the 400 meter dash, the 4x100 and the 4x400 meter relay.

Elizabeth Kline, winner of the indoor pentathlon, will try to replicate her success in the heptathlon this weekend, and will also compete in the individual 100 meter hurdles. Taranisha Taylor, Pitt’s top 100 meter hurdler will look to capture her first ever Big East title, and along with Kline, will be joined in that event by Evann Thompson. Thompson will also run in her strongest event of the 400 meter hurdles.

In the field, Ashley Corum and Julia Koloski will be contenders in the long and triple jump, and Brooke Shasteen and Taylor Slaney will compete for the javelin title.

Action at the Bauer Track and Field Complex begins on Friday afternoon and goes through Sunday afternoon. Fans can stay up-to-date with live results and Championship Central by clicking here.
