GREENSBORO, N.C. – Brycen Spratling and Jonnique Lawrence reached the finals of the 400 meter dash, and Evann Thompson made it to the finals of the 400 meter hurdles on the opening day of the NCAA East Regional Meet hosted by North Carolina A&T.
Spratling placed 20th in the prelims of the men’s 400 meter dash with a time of 46.47. He will run in the finals of the event tomorrow at 6:15 p.m. The top 12 athletes from every event will join the 12 qualifiers from the West Region and advance to the NCAA National Championship Meet which will be held in Eugene, Ore. from May 5-8.
Lawrence will also try to finish inside the top 12 when she runs tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. Lawrence qualified 16th with a time of 53.37. Teammate Arielle Fonrose placed 26th in the same event with a time of 53.94 and missed advancing to the finals by two spots.
Freshman Evann Thompson claimed the final spot in the finals of the women’s 400 meter hurdles by placing 24th in prelims with a time of 59.04; the second fastest time of her career. She will compete in the finals tomorrow evening at 7:30 p.m.
Also competing today were Andrew Wells in the discus and Micah Murray in the 400 meter dash. Wells placed 24th with a distance of 51.32m, while Murray was 37th with a time of 47.39. Neither athlete advanced, but Murray will compete again as a member of the men’s 4x400 meter relay team.
Along with Spratling, Lawrence and Thompson, Carvin Nkanata and Brett Millar will be in action tomorrow as Nkanata participates in the men’s 200 meter dash and Millar in the men's javelin. Nkanata is ranked 2nd in the East Region heading into tomorrow’s qualifying. Click here for live results.
