PITTSBURGH - After day one of the University of Pittsburgh’s Track and Field Annual Blue and Gold Meet, Team Gold is leading Team Blue 61-55.

“I was extremely pleased with the performances of everyone that competed on the first day of our annual Blue-Gold meet,” Alonzo Webb said. “There were some very impressive performances especially at this early stage of the season. I was impressed with the 40-and-40 one foot triple jumps from our female jumpers from a short approach. Also, I was pleased to see very competitive performances from the throws and hurdles groups.”

As the majority of the track events are Saturday morning, Friday's competition was focused on the field events. On the men’s side, junior Andrew Wells highlighted day one of the competition. Wells broke his third school record in both the weight throw (19.17 meters) and shot put (15.73 meters).

On the women’s side, sophomore Taylor Taranisha turned in a strong performance for the Gold team in the 60-meter dash with a top time of 7.82, while senior Julia Koloski posted the second best time for the women, 7.82.

Senior Carvin Nkanata and freshman Desmond Palmer also stood out in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.96 for the Blue team and 7.39 for the Gold team, respectively.

Competition resumes tomorrow morning at Fitzgerald Field House with the remainder of the track events. Day two is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m.
