PITTSBURGH - Members of the University of Pittsburgh track and field team collected over 50 toys to donate to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve `Toys for Tots' Program this holiday season.
Paige Lumley, Samantha Owens, Taranish Taylor, Evann Thompson of the women's team, and Chris Spadaro, along with Head Coach Alonzo Webb, Assistant Head Coach Kia Davis, Assistant Coach Adam Bray and Coordinator of Track and Field Operations Darryl Weston donated the new, unwrapped toys on Wednesday to help less fortunate children in need of gifts this holiday.
"Our athletes really look forward to helping out these kids, and some of our athletes can relate to these children because they grew up in a similar situation," Webb said. "They understand the importance of being able to give back if you're in the situation to do so. For me, it was the same way and I grew up with not having a lot. So to be in a position now where our team can help others, it's really important to make sure we do. Our athletes understand the importance of this and I really appreciate the effort they put into this as well."
The Panthers are off until after the New Year when Pitt travels to State College for the Penn State Relays on January 11th.
