Chattanooga, Tenn. -- No. 12 Pitt saw Nick Bonaccorsi and Tyler Wilps advance to the quarterfinals of the 11th annual Southern Scuffle on Wednesday afternoon at McKenzie Arena. Pitt ranks 14th in the team standings after day one.
Bonaccorsi downed Patrick Gillen of Virginia with a pin in the preliminary match and defeated Tyler Lyster of Bucknell in a 4-3 decision in the second round. He also topped Ohio's Phillip Wellington in a 13-1 sudden victory to advance to the 197-pound quarterfinals. Bonaccorsi is slated to compete against Kevin Beazley of Old Dominion for a semifinal berth.
Wilps opened the tournament with consecutive major victories against Zachary Agostino of Pennsylvania (17-4) and Scott Reilly of Air Force (17-9). He will face Virginia's Stephen Doty in the quarterfinals at 174 pounds.
In addition to the successes of Bonaccorsi and Wilps, seven additional Panthers -- Edgar Bright, Jake Keller, Shelton Mack, Mikey Racciato, Cole Sheptock, P.J. Tasser and Anthony Zanetta -- are alive in the consolation brackets and will look to reach the podium on Thursday.
