No. 12 Pitt Wrestling Wraps Up Competition at Southern Scuffle

Jan. 2, 2014

Final Brackets

Chattanooga, Tenn.  – The No. 12 University of Pittsburgh wrestling team saw a pair of wrestlers – Tyler Wilps and Nick Bonaccorsi – reach the podium at the Southern Scuffle this afternoon at McKenzie Arena. As a team, the Panthers finished 11th in the event.

Wilps finished in fourth place to pace the Pitt contingent. Wilps began his day with a convincing 8-4 decision over Virginia’s Stephen Dotty in the semifinals. Wilps then met up with No. 2 ranked Chris Perry of Oklahoma State and fell by the slimmest of margins at 2-1. In his first consolation bout, Wilps defeated Iowa State’s 14th ranked Tanner Weatherman in a high-scoring 11-7 bout before dropping his final match to Logan Storley of Minnesota.

Bonoccorsi started his day with a 2-0 win over Kevin Beasley of Old Dominion to set up a matchup with No. 1 Scott Shiller of Minnesota in the semifinals. Bonoccorsi dropped a hard-fought 6-3 decision to fall to the consolation bracket where he fell to a pair of top15 opponents by a mere three combined points to finish in sixth for the Scuffle.

In addition to the successes of Bonaccorsi and Wilps, seven additional Panthers -- Edgar Bright, Jake Keller, Shelton Mack, Mikey Racciato, Cole Sheptock, P.J. Tasser and Anthony Zanetta also wrestled on the day for Pitt.

The Panthers will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 11, when they host their first ACC home dual match against North Carolina State at 7 p.m.
