PITTSBURGH – The No. 12 University of Pittsburgh wrestling team (8-1, 3-0 ACC) dominated its competition, outscoring its opponents by a combined 109-25, en route to a 3-0 day at Pitt Duals.
Seven Panthers went 3-0 on the day as Pitt picked up victories over Duke, Buffalo and Davidson to improve to 8-1 on the season.
Pitt started the day with a convincing 29-7 victory over ACC foe Duke. The Panthers got bonus points in their first three matches with majors from Anthony Zanetta, Shelton Mack and Edgar Bright and didn’t look back. Tyler Wilps and Max Thomusseit also added majors in the victory which improved the Panthers record to 3-0 in ACC bouts.
In its second match of the day Pitt routed Buffalo 40-6. Every Panther who wrestled picked up a victory as the Bulls only points came thanks to a Pitt forfeit at 197 pounds. Mikey Racciato, Geno Morelli and Wilps picked up falls, while Zanetta, Mack, Tasser and Thomusseit registered major decisions and Bright and Eric Nutter picked up decisions. The 40 points marked the most for the Panthers in a match since scoring 41 vs. Cleveland State in February of 2011.
Pitt once again reached the 40 point plateau in its final match of the day against Davidson, 1 40-12 win. Bright, Morelli and Wilps each picked up their second fall of the day in the match while Nutter recorded a tech fall and Zanetta and Thomusseit tallied majors.
The Panthers will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 19, when they host No. 5 Oklahoma State in a 2 p.m. match at Fitzgerald Field House.
